About Daily Word

Updated 21 Sept 2026

Six guesses, five letters, one word a day for everyone.

One word a day, five letters, six guesses, the same word for everyone on earth until midnight UTC.

The board tells you more than most players use. A letter marked as present but misplaced has ruled out one position and confirmed a letter in the same stroke, and the keyboard under the board is a running summary of everything you have learned so far.

How to play Daily Word

5 steps
  1. Guess the hidden five-letter word. Type a guess and press Enter, or tap the letters on the keyboard under the board.
  2. Each letter is marked after every guess: in the word and in the right place, in the word but somewhere else, or not in the word at all.
  3. The mark is a colour and a shape — a filled square, a ring, an empty square — so the board reads the same if you cannot tell the colours apart.
  4. The keyboard keeps score too: every key you have used takes the strongest mark that letter has earned.
  5. Six guesses. Hard mode makes you reuse every letter you have already confirmed, which is a real constraint rather than a harder word.

Strategy that actually helps

5 tips
  • Open with a word that spends five different common letters. Vowel-heavy openers find where the vowels are; consonant-heavy ones rule more letters out. Either works, as long as you do not waste a letter twice in one guess.
  • A ring is more information than a filled square. Knowing a letter is in the word but not in that place removes one position and confirms the letter, so put it somewhere new immediately.
  • Guess two, not one. After the first guess, a second opener that covers five untouched common letters usually narrows the field faster than a word that tries to be the answer.
  • Mind the double letters. If a letter is marked as absent in one place but you have seen it confirmed elsewhere, the word contains exactly as many of it as the marks show.
  • Say the pattern out loud. Five-letter words with a known first and last letter are easier to recall as sound than as letters on a grid.

Controls

Mouse, keyboard, touch

Mouse and keyboard

  • Type letters; Backspace deletes; Enter submits a guess.
  • An invalid word shakes the row and says why rather than accepting it.

Touch

  • Tap the drawn keyboard under the board; each key is finger-sized.
  • Tap the backspace key to delete, and the enter key to submit.

Questions

4 answered

Is the word the same for everyone?

Yes. The day's word is worked out from the date in UTC, so every device gets the same one, and it changes at midnight UTC. Nothing about the answer is written into the page or stored on your device, so looking behind the page will not spoil it.

What does hard mode change?

It makes you use what you have learned. Any letter you have confirmed in place has to stay in that place, and any letter known to be in the word has to appear in every later guess. The words are not harder; the constraint is.

Why shapes as well as colours?

Because colour alone is not readable for everyone. Each mark carries a shape too — a filled square for the right place, a ring for a letter in the wrong place, an empty square for a letter that is not in the word — so the board works without relying on green and amber.

Can I share my result?

Yes. When the puzzle ends you get your grid as plain text you can copy anywhere. It shows the shape of your guesses, never the letters, so sharing it spoils nothing.
